Included is an Artist Statement for Nomad. Nomad is a New Series of Photographs that I am currently in the Process of Editing.

" A lived-in landscape becomes a place, which implies intimacy; a once lived in landscape can be a place, if explored, or remain a landscape, if simply observed." -Lucy Lippard, The Lure of the Local

Nomad is a semi autobiographical exploration of place. The series takes its name from a defunct, 1970’s travel trailer. (A photograph of The Nomad is included in the larger series). The title also refers to the semi-transient nature of many of the inhabitants (including DeHart).

Nomad is set on a rural island in the Pacific Northwest. DeHart created the photographs as an expression of his families time living on the island, which included building a house. His photographs depict unique natural environments and varied communities. Nomad also playfully touches upon rural mythologies, inspired by a mix of fairy tales and gritty NW realism.

The photographs were created over a two-year period, during which DeHart lived full time on the island. Prior to to his arrival, he spent a month, each year, for 5 years, creating photographic studies. The final series of Nomad is comprised of 40-50 photographs taken primarily with a 6x7 and 4x5 film camera.
