Exhibition: Land of the Stratus

Camerawork Gallery is pleased to present Land of the Stratus, a show of recent photographic works by Dennis DeHart.  Land of the Stratus is a multi-layered photographic exhibit that simultaneously engages the tensions and parallels of the natural and cultural worlds.

Land of the Stratus investigates landscape imagery through a combination of constructed and non-constructed photographs. In many instances, a kind of trauma is or has occurred in the photographs. The photos bear witness to the trauma, while equally embracing the sublimity of seeing.

Land of the Stratus takes the form of large-scale panoramas. Stylistically, DeHart references historical genres including 19^th century travel and landscapes photography. In addition, the work is informed by his print research at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY.  During DeHart’s research, he studied prints from such preeminent 19^th Century photographers as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O’Sullivan, among others. 

The prints are made on 13”x40” photo rag paper with pigment inks. Technically, the images are photographed with a full frame digital SLR using HDRI. DeHart also employs digital montage and compositing techniques, drawing from conventions of directional and staged photography.

Camerawork Gallery is the oldest fine art photography gallery in the United States. Camerwork Gallery is a community based fine art photography gallery that has exhibited shows continuously since 1970. We exhibit photographers from the Northwest with occasional exhibits by photographers from any location nationally.

“Shooting unobtrusively with a hand held camera, like a tourist, in low light meant letting go of my expectations of what an image should look like and instead let it be its own thing that I worked in Photoshop to bring out subtle detail and its “surreal”qualities. These image play with popular mythologies and my own preconceptions as a participant in the natural history displays. I see the act of making these pictures as performative and an account of seeing, both with irony and sincerity.”

Carnegie Video Re-Grants Exhibition

Included in the exhibition is my video piece Wanderlust, Part 7. The work was photographed during the summer of 2007 in Buffalo, NY. In Wanderlust, I examine place from both a personal and external view by wandering the streets, neighborhoods, pathways, and environs of intercity Buffalo. I also wander through our attic, attempting to connect and comprehend what place means to me on a personal and cultural level. Wanderlust was shot during the same time as I was developing my current series of still photographs, When I See You, I Will Show You Our Road. While each project is a separate work, the process and overlap in making the two works inform each other. Wanderlust is a continuous loop and runs on a 10.5 minute cycle. The video was primarily made with a Nikon Digital SLR still camera in addition to a Canon XL-1. The final work was edited in Final Cut Pro and designed to be projected as a single channel video installation/projection.

When I see you, I will show you our road…..

New Photographic works by Dennis DeHart

I am interested in the experience of place. This series of photographs examine the domestic aspects of mine and my immediate family’s life, home, and travels. In making this work, some questions that run through my mind, include: What constitutes home? Is home a mental state or a physical place? Are we destined to be in a perpetual wanderlust physically? Mentally? And if so, what does this mean? The passing of a loved one has raised many of these questions. I have been using some of her personal possessions, in addition to found objects, as memento moris (latin for “remember you are mortal). “Shui” was an avid bird watcher and naturalist. These photograph are made in her honor and legacy.
