In the library today, I came across the book Atget: The Pioneer. It is a book that was created in conjunction with the ICP, NY/Hôtel de Sully, Paris exhibition from 2001. It is a wonderful book that focuses on Atget, as well as contextualizes his work and influence on photography. It pairs photographers such as Winograd, The Bechers, Weston, Brandt, and Saunders with Atget photos, often side by side. While I have always enjoyed Atget, I have necessarily been part of his fan club. This changed this last year when I saw both Christopher Rauschenberg rephoto series of Paris based on Atget and some of Atget's prints, in the print viewing area at the George Eastman House in Rochester. I am now a loyal fan.
