Today I had the good fortune to visit Ellen Garvens at her home in Kenmore. I have been a fan of Ellen's unique vision for many years and first became familiar with her work while living in Seattle in the 1990's. I have a big respect for Ellen's work and feel a connection to her sensibilities as an artist. Ellen is also a UNM graduate.

Ellen mentioned that she came to UNM in the 1980's to study drawing and ended up in the photography department (apparently a scandal at the time). Interesting enough she is still making drawings. It was fabulous to see some of her new drawings and photographic works in progress on the walls of her studio. Throughout her artistic career, Ellen has blended different mediums such as sculpture, drawings, and found objects, to name a few, into her pieces. In her more recent work Prosthesis, she has combined these various approaches into more "traditional" and disturbingly gorgeous photographic prints.
Ellen also showed me a PDF of her now almost completed Lightwork catalog organized by Lightwork Assistant Director Mary Goodwin. The catalog includes photographic prints and images of her photo sculpture from the past 10 year. The catalog will be accompanying her new show at Lightwork from January to March, 2009.
