A second self published book, A Hole in My Heart Pledges Allegiance to America

By Photographs by Den...

A Hole in My Heart Pledges Allegiance to America, begins in the high deserts of Arizona, passes through the heartland of Indiana, and ends in the industrial flatlands of New York. In these photographs, there is an unfamiliarity that could not be more familiar to each of us. Photographed from 2004-2008, what remains is the ernestness of belonging.

Americanness is nobodiness. Deep down, I feel like a nobody; and this void in me is the ernest of my belonging. A hole in my heart pledges allegiance to America. -Peter Schjeldahl, from the essay, America
